Documents Viewer
A digest is a set of documents (more precisely, a set of document numbers). Once you have chosen a digest you will want to inspect the documents it contains. This is the job of the Documents Viewer. NOTE: You must be a registered and logged-in user to access the Documents Viewer (registration is free).
The Documents Viewer will display the documents contained in the following digest types:
- document pile or docpile
- community digest
- personal digest created by the user
- Cooperative Patent Classification subgroup
- Quick View mode whereby document numbers are manually entered into a text box
The Documents Viewer screen is divided into several distinct areas, discussed below.
- Title of digest being viewed
- Source of the digest, i.e., the collection or database from which the digest is derived (this Source corresponds to the digest type discussed above)
- The digest symbol (it's unique to the digest) and the total number of documents of all types in the digest
- Button to review a list of recently viewed digests
- Indication of the types of documents in the digest
- Number of documents in each particular document type
- For a given document type, activate the TABLE view mode
- For a given document type, activate the SEQUENTIAL view mode
- For a given document type, activate the FORMATTED TEXT view mode
- This area is where the selected view mode will be seen

View Modes
Table
The Table viewing mode shows all the digest documents in a Table format. Clicking on any individual document will bring up tagging and cpc classifications and further 3rd party viewing options. The Documents Viewer keeps track of your viewing location in the digest. If you click on a document in Table View and then switch to the Sequential View mode, you will pick up at the Table View document. Thus the Table view is a convenient way to navigate a digest.
Sequential
The sequential viewing mode allows a digest to be viewed one document at a time. Each click of the Next button will display all the tagging classifications and cpc classifications of the next document in the digest and will transfer the browser focus to a browser window of the selected 3rd party database for a view of the actual document.
Formatted Text
The purpose of the Formatted Text viewing mode is to allow a copy-and-paste transfer of a text block of document numbers to a 3rd party patent database, for example to the USPTO Patent Public Search application. At the date of writing this help screen, only two formats are available: plain text document numbers, e.g., 4123456 ; and a format suitable for the USPTO Patent Public Search application, e.g. "4123456".pn . Contact the site administrator if you need additional formats.
